pretty as a speckled pup. var., cute as (cuter than) a speckled pup (tied to a red wagon). Especially attractively cute. What is so darn cute about the speckles is not exactly clear to me. Does it refer to a specific breed? Not that I can discover.

Speckled pup is also the name for a variety of winter squash which is not particularly attractive or cute.
