McGruff the Crime Dog. This icon of American crime awareness is targeted specifically at children. He was created by Jack Keil for the National Crime Prevention Council in 1980.

Like many earnest spokesdogs, McGruff is a tempting target for satire. Both The Simpsons and Family Guy have used the reference, as has fake news commentator Jon Stewart.
