Canary Islands. This series of seven small land masses off the coast of Spain in the Atlantic Ocean was named for dogs, not birds. They were named by the Romans as Insulae Canariae, or Island of the Dogs because they were inhabited by large packs of wild dogs. There is a breed named specifically for that archipelago, the Canary Island Mastiff.
